- Finnish Kennel Clubs agreement for breeders (sorry, this link is only at finnish and swedish languages) says, that all breeders should publish all information concerning all breeding that they do. Here you can find details that you can´t find from Finnish Kennel Clubs breeders database.

CHIARI MALFORMATION, SYRINGOMYELIA and NARCOLEPSY

UPDATE 2.3.2010: Link to the site, where you can find a details how narcolepsy goes on lines. In dogs, narcolepsy is frequently inherited. The mutated gene that causes it is recessive, which means that if a dam and sire are both carriers, one-quarter of their pups will have the disease and one half will be carriers. So if this fits allso in poodles, must all Egoist Iz Volzhkoy Serenadys puppies be at least carriers to this disease because he is sick.

Last autumn a series of sad happenings concerning the offspring of my imported males took place and some dogs even died prematurely. After these incidents we started deeper medical investigations of our dogs and in this story we publish the diagnoses.

EGOIST IZ VOLZHKOY SERENADY “Erkki”
Everything started when Erkki's 2 year old son died suddenly. It was the trigger which made me think whether there is something really wrong.

By that time Erkki had officially been eye and knee checked and was stated as totally healthy. Nobody thought that this was not the fact until that morning when Erkki's son tragically died. It stopped me to think and set some priorities because I was certain there was something behind that had to be found out. We started to investicate more of Erkkis situation on November 2008 and at 17.4.2009 we got the first results with diagnose "Narcolepsy suspected".

We started with Erkki and his condition and found out that he had had a couple occasional fits of unconsciousness which had lasted a few seconds. The situation has changed when Erkki has grown older and the fits of unconsciousness have lasted longer.

Erkki looses consciousness, is unconscious for a moment and gets up as if nothing had happened and continues with what he was originally doing.

The fit lasts for a short period and starts with shaking hind legs after which Erkki slowly falls down and his muscles resist which causes the movement to seem like twitching. Then he seems to "wake up" from the sleep and continues as if nothing had happened. There are no symptoms to be seen afterwards like e.g. in epilepsy.

After the veterinary investigation it was found out that erkki was suffering from Iris hypoplasia and reflux disease.

In iris hypoplasia the pupils are not reacting normally to light but are slow or almost not reacting to light. Erkki's pupils are almost non reacting to light. The vet thought this eye condition could perhaps be caused by some neurological problem but the root cause could not be found with traditional methods.

The only way to possibly find out something was to use magnetic resonance imaging and angiography. However, the diagnosis was that the skull, the back of the head and brains were all normal. The vet thought and Erkki might be surrefing from narcolepsy as his symptoms fitted with it. When I write this Erkki has started narcolepsy medication and there have been no fits of unconsciousness since. He seems to be responding to the medication and the diagnosis seems certain.

Erkki has had 9 litters with 23 puppies. When these offspring will be officially eye tested the vet should be asked to investigate the eyes first without the dilating eye drops as iris hypoplasia cannot be diagnosed after them like happened in our case at first.

Now Erkki is having his medication and all the symptoms has gone, so he has a diagnose: Narcolepsy.

TRUCKER´S DÉJÀ VU “Vappu” and TRUCKER´S DOUBLE TROUBLE “Bono”
Vappu and Bono are young toy poodles born in June 2008 and thus they have not yet been officially eye or knee checked. Both are very small sized toypoodles.

Vappu's symptoms started very suddenly after trimming last winter. She started feeling ill during the night and could not move her neck. When touched her neck was sensitive and her movements were occasionally not totally controlled. She was diagnosed to have so much neck pain that the received painkillers and a referral to magnetic resonance imaging.

The magnetic resonance imaging revealed that she had some bruising in the spinal cord and it also revealed that she was suffering from a mild chiari malformation.

Bono's symptoms started with trembling and the weakening of coordination during the trembling. It seems that he is suffering but you cannot say where. The dog occasionally moves like he were drunk. However, you cannot see that unless you are experienced.

Bono has been suffering from 3 attacks of trembling during 4 months. He was also taken to magnetic resonance imaging and was diagnosed with mild chiari malformation (0.9 mm) and mild syringomyelia.

According to the vet's report these changes does not explain the pain vappu and Bono are occasionally suffering from. The dogs were 10 months of age when the magnetic resonance imaging took place. The recommended age for this investigation is 2-3 years which means that we have to retake the magnetic resonance imaging if the symptoms get worse.

Bono was in X-ray examination earlier. His hips are A/A, but his hip in not straight.

INKOGNITO IZ VOLZHKOY SERENADY “Boni”
Boni was investigated together with Erkki because there are 2 similarities in their pedigrees. Boni has officially been knee and eye checked and everything seemed to be OK. Boni has always been and still is a very agile dog which has excellent coordination abilities. It is a very happy dog and its charming self who does not seem to have a worry in the world. He is so normally behaved that nobody can say that it had something wrong with it.

However, Boni has had once in the summer been unconscious when he has vomited after eating grass. This has happened now 4 times in 3 years. The periods of unconsciousness have been very brief and have always happened in connection with vomiting. The veterinary investigation revealed that Boni has the same problems as Erkki has: Iris hypoplasia and reflux disease. We also decided to take magnetic resonance imaging from him as well. The magnetic resonance imaging revealed the very mild chiari malformation and he does not suffer from it at all.

TRUCKER´S ÖVERSTI “Onni” and TRUCKER´S ÖVERSTINNA “Saga”
Onni and Saga are from the litter of Boni and my Swedish import female. Both has diagnosed with iris hypoplapsia. This told us that iris hypoplasia is to be obtained by heredity. The trouble is cosmetic but it seems to have been inherited by their sire and this was not good news. It does not effect the normal life and can cause blinding in direct strong sun in the summer or in very clear winterdays when there is snow in the ground.

Neither of these 2 dogs are suffering from fainting or loss of consciousness. They are both in "Not for Breeding" register because both have tail knock at the bottom of the tail. He whole litter is suffering from the same kind of problems but it was noticed in these 2 before registration, so one of these puppies are in normal register..

Three Trucker´s poodles have had seizures and they are diagnosed in veterinary clinic. These three poodles come from the same litter.

TRUCKER`S KISS MY ASS "Dino"

Dino was a little white angel boy, born 4.9.2009. He had put in to sleep when he was only 7 weeks old. He had serious joint problems. Dino was so young that he has not been registered to Finnish Kennel Club, so you won´t find him at breeder database. His parents were Jasenak Swarovski and Trucker´s Beating Soul. Dino had a microchip and parentage test done.

We don´t know what went wrong with the pregnancy, so this kind of mutation game out.

This black standard boy got sick from his stomack. He went through medical investication and got medicines and everything. But nothing helped him. He was little over two years old, when he had to put in sleep. Here is his medical certificates published. Only one is in english and rest of them are in finnish. I try to translate this all to english as soon as possible.
